How do we teach P4C at Fleckney School?

Aim

P4C is an approach to teaching, which aims to develop thinking (and oracy) skills. It is a pedagogy which is used to enhance learning in many subject areas; interwoven within many areas of the curriculum.

Here at Fleckney Primary, we want to teach children the skills they will need to become well-balanced, responsible, successful adults; by teaching children the 4Cs below, it will help them to achieve this.

If children are able to work -

• Collaboratively, they will be able to work with other people in harmony. They will learn tolerance, respect and compromise.
• Caring If children are taught to be caring towards each other they will learn respect and empathy.
• Critical If children are able to think critically, it will enable them to constantly evaluate their work and behaviours. It will also help them to make links between lessons, subjects and life events.
• Creative If children are able to think creatively, it will enable them to tackle situations in a variety of ways, some of which others may not have thought of.

How do we teach PSHCE at Fleckney School?

Aim

Our aims in PSHCE are for children to:

• Develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to keep themselves healthy and safe, and prepared for life and work.

Well delivered PSHE programmes have an impact on both the academic and non-academic outcomes for pupils, particularly the most vulnerable and disadvantaged.

Planning and Delivery

Throughout our school we follow the Cambridgeshire PSHCE programme, which offers teachers a comprehensive planning tool, across all the aspects of this complex subject. As a school we are following a 2-year rolling programme, from Foundation Stage, to ensure children receive a broad overview of areas related to this subject and in light of future school expansion.

The relationships and health aspects of PSHE education will be compulsory in all primary schools from September 2020.

In preparation for this, all teachers are delivering PSHCE every week and making sure it is timetabled as a discreet lesson. Teachers are also including certain aspects of the PSHCE programme of study through Science, P4C and Literacy. Mrs Teear has led a staff meeting on this, and has monitored this area of PSHCE from September 2019 onwards.
